Kanjiro Kawai

Kanjiro Kawai was an artist and a potter in early 20th century. He was an important member of MinGei movement together with Soetsu Yanagi and Bernerd Leach (related page is here, and here ). His house and studio in Kyoto was well restored and open to public as a museum.

His house was typical Kyoto style outside, but interior is uniquely designed in the manner of an artist.

His pottery oven, I should say a blick kiln, was still there even now in the crowded city.

As an artist and a member of MinGei, he had a sensitive eye for craftworks. His diverse collections of living wares and folk crafts were very unique.
