texture of a wooden wall

The old house below is a Japanese style hotel in Kyoto, famous Ryokan called Tawaraya.

The surface of the wooden wall is unique V-shaped cutting which is probably made by hand using a kind of traditional carpenter tools like a chisel. ( related page is here ) I have never seen this texture before, though.
