thatched houses

Thatched houses are rarely seen in Japan nowadays, most of them are Gassho-Zukuri style and conserved as a cultural properties. You can see some of them in the mountain area of Gifu/Toyama and amazingly many of them are still active, people are actually living in the house and maintaining it.


Many are three story houses built to live, to work and to raise silkworms, and some are quite small barn possibly for storage like pictured below.
