Machi-ya is a traditional style of Japanese wooden townhouse, its facade faced to the street is narrow but the depth is usually quite long. They have undergone rapid decline in numbers in recent years, with many being demolished unfortunately.

Picture below is old Machi-ya in Kanazawa, which still remains after the buildings on both sides were torn down. ( related page is here )
